Zero Waste Crystal Deodorant

I’ve been rubbing my armpits with a crystal for over a year and a half with no complaints yet!

We’ve all heard the horror stories of cancer-causing antiperspirants and deodorants circling the net. Slathering it on thick since we were in our early teens, it was a shock to learn that this everyday ritual could end in a double mastectomy to say the least.

There are many natural deodorants on the market but it can be tough to find ones that fit the Zero Waste bill. You could try making your own Zero Waste deodorant from coconut oil, baking soda and peppermint oil, but that can get a bit messy.

Not finding any other natural and Zero Waste deodorant solutions to my liking I stuck with what I had to finish it off and keep an eye out for something that might work. Walking through the Townsville markets one day, I spotted a handmade soap stall and checked it out. Upon closer inspection I found the most beautiful crystal deodorant in minimally packaging!

Crystal deodorants are as natural as you can get consisting of purely mineral salts. The potassium alum naturally repels odour-causing bacteria which reside in our armpits.

It was over a year and half ago now that I found that deodorant and I wish I had taken note of the brand. Because I can’t remember for the life of me what it was called.

I was loving using my crystal every morning and it even felt a bit fancy to incorporate a crystal into my daily routine. Until one drowsy morning it slipped right out of my hand and shattered on the bathroom tiles.

Absolutely devastating.

Picking up the pieces I didn’t know what I was going to do. I had never seen another one like it and I wasn’t going to travel back to Townsville anytime soon, I thought it was the end of my crystal deodorant for good. Looking at the broken pieces I decided to see if I could fix it, which by the way is pointless. However you can still use the broken pieces just be careful dabbing them onto your pits as I’ve been scratched a couple times with my crystal fragments. On the up side it will last a whole lot longer as the whole crystal isn’t getting wet.

Moral of the story, get yourself a crystal deodorant and don’t drop it on the floor! But it’s not the end of the story if you do…

But does it work?

Crystal deodorant is not an antiperspirant, so you will still sweat. However you won’t stink! In fact because the crystal creates a barrier on your skin preventing odour-causing bacteria, you just won’t smell like anything. Dab on a bit of your favourite essential oil if you like to smell pretty.

How do you use it?

All you have to do is wet it then rub under your armpits and let dry. It was lovely and smooth to use, without leaving any sticky residue. No stains on your clothing either which is a plus.

No nasties

Natural crystal deodorant doesn’t contain any aluminum chlorohydrate which many have claimed to cause cancer or any other harsh chemicals. Making it safe for anyone with sensitive skin or allergies

Keep in mind that if you’ve been using commercial antiperspirants, your body needs to detox from all those chemical nasties. It will take a few days of using your natural crystal before it takes the edge off your stink, but when your detox is completed you should be feeling fresh.
